EV Myths, Precautions & Opportunities

On 13 August 2025, Southern Otways Sustainable (SOS) was invited to lead a community discussion on Electric Vehicles (EVs), hosted by the Apollo Bay Discussion Group.

These monthly gatherings are well attended and provide a relaxed, welcoming space for thoughtful conversation. Held at the Bottom Pub, participants enjoy meals and drinks as part of the evening’s activities.

The event is coordinated by Apollo Bay Rural Australians for Refugees (ABRAR), with all proceeds supporting their vital work. ABRAR is a grassroots initiative that provides direct assistance to families in Afghanistan, offering meaningful support where it’s needed most.

The Agenda

The evening was opened by Ali and hosted by Nicola, guiding participants through a well-paced and engaging session. There were around 70 attendees.

Evening Highlights

  • Opening Presentation A video presentation by Riz, Victorian Chair of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association, set the scene with insights into the future of EVs.
  • Prepared Q&A Matt and Nigel responded to key questions curated by Nicola, addressing common concerns and misconceptions around EV adoption.
  • Dinner Break Attendees enjoyed meals and drinks, continuing conversations informally around the tables.
  • Panel Discussion A lively Q&A with local EV owners and the RACV representative. Panelists included Steffi, Graham, Craig, David, Kel, and Andrew, who shared real-world experiences and answered audience questions.
  • Open Floor Discussion As the evening wound down, the audience engaged in broader conversations, sharing thoughts and reflections.
  • EV Show & Tell Some attendees joined EV owners outside for a closer look at their vehicles — a hands-on way to explore the technology.
